F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C Family Beach - Balmoral

We finally got to Balmoral Beach.  I think it is by far the closest beach from our house - 25 minutes.  It has been recommended by everyone with children and now we know why.
Great big trees for shade, awesome playground, calm waters, white sand great for making sand castles, a wee island to explore, yummy fish & chips, coffee, ice-creams, lots of families and kids.  It is close enough for us so that we can go there for a picnic/bbq on a weeknight throughout year.

Kookaburras and Birthday Parties

Hello everyone.

The week was filled with work, school and lessons.  Pretty uneventful.

However, we did see a kookaburra hanging out in our back yard.  Their distinctive, loud and far-carrying laughter can be heard often around here.  kook-kook-kook!

Margot also went to a birthday bowling party this Friday.
Jonathan Saab turned six.
Fiona also had some friends to play with.

A visit with cousin Andy

Cousin Andy (from Canberra) was in town and we got to hang out for a bit.
He took 'us' (Karen) to the Seafolly Outlet (Aussie swimwear) in Alexandria.  Karen got bathers for $15!  But don't ask how much the girls' swimsuits cost!
We had a couple of dinners in our neighbourhood.
The girls love him!

Maya is FOUR!

We went to Nelson Bay this past weekend to help Maya Cuerrier celebrate her fourth birthday!
The weather was great.  The parents got to boogie board.  We had  a fabulous time!
Al and Teresa were grand hosts and the kids got on fantastic.

The dramas of the weekend were:
1.  Karen got sand in her eye and ended up at the hospital briefly to have it flushed out.  We didn't have to wait very long for the nurse.  It was a 3 - 4 hr. wait for a doctor but thankfully there was no need.
2.  Karen drove in Nelson Bay as there were few cars.  She is still having some problems with those hill starts.

Gung Hey Fat Choy...

Happy Chinese New Year!

Friday night we went to Parramatta for the Twilight Noodle Market for some Chinese New Year festivities.  It was fairly pathetic but the kids enjoyed it.  There were three bouncy castles and a tea cup ride; a handful of food stalls like the PNE but the food was pretty yucky
; a salsa six piece latin band which was pretty entertaining.  The evening ended with rain but fun was had by all.

Saturday we attended the teacher's exchange picnic.  It was supposed to be an outdoor event but we were rained out and ended up in a hall at Concord Public School.  We met a variety of teachers from mainly Canada (Ottawa, Calgary), US (Seattle) and the UK living in the Sydney area.  We ate lunch, shared some stories and left for the beach.

By the afternoon the weather
had cleared up so we decided to head to Bondi Beach - the most famous beach in the world.  At first, we were doubtful of Bondi's notoriety .  It looked like every other beach in Australia.  However, as the hours went by, and the light started changing, it was a gorgeous sight.  It was especially quiet because the weather had been poor earlier in the day.  It was nice to see it not so busy and hectic.  The beach is 1 km long but very deep with fine white sand.  The boardwalk provides city dwellers a place to walk and enjoy the scenery.  There were shops, restaurants and cafes all along Campbell Parade.  The cliffs at both ends of the beach were breathtaking.  Okay, Bondi is pretty darn nice for a city beach!

On our way home to Northmead, we witnessed an amazing sight above the city centre, up in the deep, dark blue sky.  The fruitbats fly from the Botanical Gardens head to the eastern suburbs at dusk.  Hundreds of bats flying above us.  It's pretty amazing.

On Sunday, we spent some time chatting and skyping family and friends. A special Happy Birthday to Granda who turned 75 on the weekend!!  We're wishing John a year of good health and many laughs.  By 1 pm, we finally got our gear ready and headed to the beach.  The skies were blue and we felt we had better jump on the opportunity before the rain starts again.  We headed to the Northern beaches.  That decision is based mainly on trying to avoid the tolled highways.  We decided to go to Avalon and Newport.  Avalon was quite beautiful but swimming was prohibited.  The girls played in the playground, we had some lunch and coffee and headed out.  The Northern beaches reminds us of California with it's dramatic cliffs & waves, multi-million dollar homes and ritzy shops.  There were lots of families at the Avalon playground - all very yuppy and Yaletown like.

Late afternoon, we drove back down to Newport and spent a few hours at the empty beach building sand castles and collecting shells.  There were lots of people hang-gliding and surfing.  It was a fun beach.

Well, that was another full weekend.

Up and Down; Up and Down

We survived our first week of school, work and new routines but not without some minor tribulations.

The weather was unpredictable with rain, sun, drizzle, thunder and lightening.  Some days Margot was able to get a lift and on the dry days we took the bus/walked.  On the 'rainy' days it is FULL-ON rain.  Although we are from Vancouver and very much used to rain, the rain drops here are the size of small pebbles.  One gets drenched in a second!  The other problem with the weather is the lack of sun and heat to dry our laundry.  The house has a dryer but it takes twice as long to get clothes dried in comparison to our dryer at home.  I can understand why many Australians don't even own dryers as clothing will dry in a few hours on the clothing line!

The only issue with catching the bus to school is trying to get the three of us across Windsor Road.   We have been following the footsteps of the locals in getting across Windsor - when in Rome, do as the Romans do etc.  There is a small island in the middle of the road so we cross in two segments and have to spend some time on the small island with cars a few feet in front and behind us.   It is quite dangerous but the pedestrian lights are another two blocks away.  Hmm, next week we will add those few extra blocks to our walk for a piece of mind.

The other major downer of the week was that we had an outage (due to the rain and storms) with our internet provider from Monday to Friday morning!   It was super irritating not having access to the the internet.  So many hours were wasted trying to reset modems and routers and on the phone with Primus.  Urg!  We finally reset the modem on Friday and we got the laptop up and running.  It is still VERY slow so we hope to change our broadband plan next week.

Fergus' first full week was an adjustment but he'll update you all soon.

Here are some of the highlights of the week:

The girls are registered for swimming lessons at the pool down the street.
Fiona - Mondays at 9:30 am and Fridays at 11:30 am
Margot - Tuesdays at 4:30 pm and Wednesdays at 5:30 pm
Classes are maximum of 4 and we hope the girls will be doing all the strokes by the end of the year!

Karen has joined the gym down the street.  Yes, you read correctly, Karen is a full fledged member of a FITNESS GYM!  She went to her first class on Thursday - Body Pump - lots of weights and bars and lunges so her body is feeling every muscle this weekend.  There is free child minding with the gym membership so Fiona gets some time with the other kiddies.  Unfortunately the facility is very small and there are lots of kids in the room at one time....some were unhappy and screaming; but for now Fiona is quite happy with the socialization that she is missing from back home.

Fiona and Karen also went to Playgroup on Tuesday at Margot's school.  It is a parent run group of about 10 Moms.  It is from 9 - 11 ish every Tuesday and it is held in the school hall.  There are a few wee girls the same age as Fiona to play with and lots of toys as well.  Each week a Mom takes a turn to make morning tea for the other Moms and an activity (craft) for the kids.  The Moms are planning a dinner out and also a get-away to possibly Hunter Valley (wine region) or the Blue Mountains --- Horray!!!!!  Fiona and Karen loved the chance to talk to folks of a like mind!  They were very happy on Tuesday.

Fiona and Karen went to see Enchanted on Thursday with Gabrielle and Heath (3).  Gabrille is the career counsellor at Fergus' school.  She works part time and is keen to have playdates.  Fiona and Heath got on well and it was Heath's first visit to the cinema.  Being a boy, he surprisingly liked the movie of love forever and ever, princesses and fairy land!

Margot's school is great so far.  The parents at drop off and pick up are all very chatty and welcoming.  However, Margot says that she prefers Nootka and school in Canada as it is not as strict and there is more playtime and in general it is more fun.  There are more rules here in Australia and Margot is adjusting.   She is sometimes self-conscious of her accent and that the other kids are staring at her when she speaks.  She says that the other kids can write very neatly but "in Vancouver, they don't care about that so much".  Margot is practicing her writing in her homework book.  Despite these early thoughts, Margot can now do a perfect back bend and is trying to perfect her cartwheels.  She's made lots of new friends and everyone is very genuine and warm.  We have had to cover about 8 of her 'books' (journals, homework, notebooks) with contact paper so academically we hope that she will be ahead by the end of the year.

WET WET WET!!!

Last Sunday, we decided to head out to a beach.  Maybe we wouldn't be able to go in the water, but at least we could build some sand castles.  That WAS our intention at first, but by 10 am it was POURING.  We decided to go to the Cook and Philip indoor pool near Hyde Park instead.  The drive was about 30 minutes on the tolled M2.

A couple of things to note about driving in Sydney:
1.  Some of the motorways are tolled (private) and others are not (public).  It costs about $20 for a return trip to and from our house to the city centre; this can get very pricey but the non-tolled roads can be very busy and are a giant parking lot on the weekends.
2.   The streets do not follow a grid design as in Vancouver so they are ALL over the place.  Different parts of a street will have different names, even if it's in the same suburb.  There is no easy way to decipher whether we are heading north, south, east or west.  The road signs are pretty horrendous and usually covered by over-grown bush.  Needless to say, we often get lost.  Not for long or very far, but we end up driving around and around at least once on every journey.
3.    The Sydney mapbook is over 500 pages thick!  I don't know exactly how many suburbs make up the Sydney area but there are ALOT!!

Anyhow the pool was good.  There was a wave pool and a hydrotherapy pool (ie hot tub).  The girls enjoyed it and Fergus got a chance to do 20 laps as well.  After our swim, we stopped at a neighbouring cafe/restaurant - Bodhi in the Park.  On our way to the pool we saw lots of people eating there so we thought it might be good.  There was outdoor seating and the restaurant served dim sum.  Well, it turned out to the strangest meal we've had in a very long time.  NOTHING tasted like the dim sum we were familiar with.  Only afterwards did we realize that it was a VEGAN dim sum restaurant!  The sticky rice had lots of mushrooms and no meat.  The BBQ pork buns were called BBQ buns but the contents were unknown to us.  Anyways, the food was very bad and it was a crappy way to spend $50, but the setting was different and interesting.  We're here for new experiences, right??

Another Wet Weekend...Saturday

Unfortunately we were faced with another very wet weekend.  What to do?  What to do?

Saturday - we ended up baking chocolate chip cookies following a Bill Granger recipe.  Bill Granger is a well known Sydney chef and restaurateur.  The cookies were good (crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside) even though they were a bit too sweet.  Of course Fiona found them to be just fine!

Oh yes, Karen also had her first drive to the shops ALONE on Saturday morning.  She did okay and made it there and back without too much drama, apart from stalling once at a round-about, forgetting her keys at the store and accidentally missing a turn and ended up towards a big road.  She was able to reverse and got herself home, safe and sound!

In the afternoon, we set off to Glebe for the public market.  It's on every Saturday and has a mixture of used things, handmade crafts, imported stuff from around the world.  We particularly liked a stand where everything was made of recycled items - milk cartons, wood, computer parts, etc.

After the market, we then took a train to Convention and got on the monorail for a tour of the city centre.  We went around the loop twice without getting off.  The monorail seemed a bit lame with only 4 cars and 8 stops but the girls enjoyed it.  Sydney is busy and bustling; the architecture is a combination of modern and victorian.   At times, Sydney reminds us of Asia and at other times it is like the UK, but then again the coast is alot like California.  Sydney is well,.... Sydney!

Karen's cousin Phil and girlfriend Kaelly were visiting from Canberra.  Aimee (Phil's sis) lives near Glebe in Annadale so it was an opportune time to meet up.   We met in Newtown on King Street at "Thai One Ong" (or something like that) for dinner.   We haven't see Aimee since 2001 at our Grandad's birthday.  It was great to catch up.  The restaurant is cheap but good, nothing fancy but enjoyable.  We sat outside in the back garden.  Our girls are always infatuated with pretty feminine girls so they loved Aimee and Kaelly (and Phil too of course!).   Dinner was great, catching up with the gang.  Aimee is super bubbly and warm.  She was able to score us free tix to the aquarium, wildlife park and tower.  Way to go Aimee!!  ;-)
